Greek Costume – Be An Ancient Greek Hero, God or Goddess
A Greek costume can be a fun outfit to wear at your next themed party or even a Halloween event. Most Greek costumes refer to the time period when Greece was the center of western civilization – ancient Greece in fact (around the 5th-4th century BC). Most of these costumes tend to be of Greek heroes or gods and goddesses. But what could be better than being a hero or God for a night (or even both in one night !)

Most Greek costumes are taken from the history or mythology of the time. The history was recorded by the likes of Aristotle and his contemporaries. Mythology was often created by oral story tellers to explain natural phenomena to the general populace. Gods battling for supremacy might explain fierce storms or earthquakes. It made these events seem understandable and even gave the ordinary folk someone to pray to, to stop such events taking place. Stories were also told of heroes and great adventures as an allegory for the way a person should live their life. Striving to be heroic was considered to be a good thing for the individual and the society in general so this was encouraged.
Anyhow here are a few Greek costumes to look at :
In terms of Greek gods, how about the top man – Zeus. He was king of the gods and sat atop Mount Olympus surveying the world around him. He commanded the sky, thunder and lightning. He fathered some of the civilizations heroes, such as Hercules. Zeus is the big Kahuna. His costume comprises a gray toga, drape, decorative chest plate, two arm guards with lightning bolt symbols, and copper crown.

You may want to go for a Greek Goddess instead. The first one to think about is Aphrodite, the Goddess of love and beauty. A Greek Goddess costume includes a floor length gown that subtly transitions from white at the top to aqua at the bottom featuring attached flowing sleeve caps and gold trim along the bust. A gold leafy headpiece is also included to turn you into a radiant and graceful goddess like Aphrodite.
And what better costume to wear to a party than Dionysus, the god of wine, the inspirer of ritual madness and ecstasy. The Dionysus Greek Costume includes a white robe with attached burgundy sash with the words “In Vino Veritas” printed on it, a gold robe belt and a wreath headpiece. Pretty simple costume in fact but what will being Dionysus for a night inspire in you. It certainly inspired Jim Morrison onto the road to excess leading to the palace of wisdom…for we never know what is enough until we know what is more than enough.

In terms of heroes, you can’t go wrong with the good old Spartans. They lived a heroic or warrior life that was harsh and brutal but made them capable of heroic deeds, such as the defense of Greek shores from a Persian force that outnumbered them many times over. This event or battle has been immortalized in many a tale, most recently the movie 300.
Background To Ancient Greece.
The ancient Greek civilization is often referred to as the cradle of western civilization as many of the ideas that shape our current societies (notably European and other western style societies like the United States, Australia and many S.American countries) hailed from this neck of the woods.
Two aspects of ancient Greek civilization that still exist in some shape or form today are the architecture and the various political ideals such a democracy. Much of western philosophy was started in Ancient Greece with men like Plato and Aristotle whose works are still read today.
It could even be argued that the Greek defeat of the Persian armies during this time allowed Europe to develop into it’s own unique consciousness without being influenced by Persian ideals that could be said to be more advanced at the time.
