A little bit of history on this historic piece

A Little bit of History

Back in ancient Greece, a war would always break out somewhere.  This is mainly because the Greeks used to live in city states.  These were kind of like small towns with the population not exceeding one hundred thousand.  The four main city states were Athens, Corinth, Sparta, and Thebes.  So many warriors would always go to battle fighting over borders and land.  Sometimes alliances were formed, often time enemies were made.

Out of all the soldiers from ancient Greece, no doubt the Spartans were definitely the toughest.  Warfare was second nature to them as they were trained in the art since birth.  Their upbringing was brutal as the elders and rulers would separate the weak from the strong leaving them to die.  Kindness was also a weakness they avoided.  Not knowing anything else but the life they were taught, the Spartans only had one purpose, to fight and die for their state.

Most people are familiar with these ancient Greek costumes or at least they think they are anyway. Everyone has watched the movies, the TV series and maybe read one or two books on the subject of ancient Greece. In particular the mythology. People can’t get enough of the huge and hideous monsters or the sexy looking heroes and gods. The most recent installment on our interest in all things from ancient Greece was the recently released movie “The Clash of the Titans”. This came out in early 2010 and tells the tale of Perseus the hero who defeats various monsters and causes the Gods to fight.

There are many female characters in this film that wear great costumes. There is Io and goddesses like Aphrodite and Athena. Athena was actually supposed to be in the film but her scenes were cut. Bet she was one angry goddess. Seeing as she was the goddess of warfare maybe you shouldn’t mess with her.

Greek goddess costumes are typically a gown or flowing dress. They are usually in white but you can get other colors. I guess white has a heavenly aspect to. Some of these gowns come in white but blend into other colors like an azure blue or a crimson red to give the costume a bit more character.

They might also wear various pieces of jewelry and other accessories to make them look more important. For instance, they may wear some form of headpiece or even a crown to show that they are a god.

Some of the accessories can highlight their special powers or responsibilities. For instance Aphrodite is the goddess of lust, beauty and sexuality. Apart from looking ravishingly beautiful maybe she could wear items or simply dress in a way that emphasizes these qualities.

Athena is referred to as the goddess of war. She will also wear a white gown but might have a more elaborate headpiece that is almost like a war like helmet. She may even wear arm gauntlets too to highlight this aspect of war.

Medusa makes a great costume because she can be portrayed as being astonishingly beautiful but have a head full of snakes. Greek mythology describes things like how the word was created and how it is run. This involved gods and goddesses who had control over various things that made life possible. The mythology also involved monsters, from deep seas creatures like the Kraken through to one eye beasts like the Cyclops. Often these monsters would be pitted against heroes and thus Greek heroes were also part of the mythology.

Greek mythology was passed on in an oral tradition. Storytellers would regale audiences with the trials and tribulations of heroes like Heracles or Perseus. Or scare then witless with stories of the horrible Medusa or minotaur. Finally they would appeal to their reverent side with tales of how the gods and goddesses acted and expected humans to act.

In short, these tales gave the average person a bit of perspective on their life.

Tales of the heroes showed them what to strive for in life and how to live a good life. How to have an heroic ethic.

The tales of Gods and Goddesses helped to explain the complex questions that came with living (questions that we still ask ourselves) like why are we here, what is the point, how did we come into existence and things of that nature.

And the monster tales were probably told to scare (everyone likes a good scare once in a while) and teach lessons (monsters were often humans transformed into monsters by the gods because of some transgression).

Some of these oral tales were eventually committed to writing and this is probably the only reason we still have them and talk about them today. For instance, people love the various intrigues that the Greek gods had, the recent movie Clash of the Titans is proof of this.

So if you are planning to wear a Greek mythology costume for Halloween or some other fancy dress costume you can go as a Greek Hero, Greek God or Goddess or a Greek mythical monster. Collectively Greek costumes.

The most current Greek hero is Perseus from the aforementioned movie. You can make your own Perseus costume as it is simply a guy in a suit or armor or you can buy the outfit from a costume shop or online. Online is the easiest option.

There are plenty of Gods and Goddesses costumes to choose from and they can be great for a party. For instance, Dionysus would make a party costume because he is the god of parties and generally squeezing every inch you can get out of life. In terms of monsters, there are not many that translated to a simply costume. Trying to make the kraken costume for instance is not really an option (although a creature reacher costume might do the trick). However Medusa, the snake headed woman would be a great Halloween party costume to wear. It has a good mix of looking good and looking slightly grotesque. You can base your Medusa costume on how glamorous and how grotesque you want to be and go from there.

Ancient Greek costumes or rather those inspired by ancient Greece can basically be broken down into three types.

You will get the fighting costumes – warrior, soldier and general type costumes. Possibly the most popular version of this currently is the spartan warrior costume as seen in the 300 movie from a few years ago. This movie made quite an impression on the popular culture and thus is a favorite at fancy dress parties or even Halloween.

You can get a fairly accurate looking version of this costume from the costume stores or online but of course the armor is made of plastic, as is the helmet and sword. It would be more authentic to have proper metal armor but not really practical in a social setting like a party and probably quite uncomfortable after a few hours.

There is also the day to day costumes that the ordinary men and women might have worn in Athens, Corinth, Sparta or other towns and cities of the Greek states. You might call these toga type costumes but in fact Greeks did not wear a toga (this was a Roman thing) but they did wear something similar. Most ancient civilizations, including Greece and Roman, wore a type of tunic.

This was a simple smock that covered the torso down to the knees. There would be holes for the arms and the head to poke through. Some tunics might have longer sleeves. Some tunics might even have longer hemlines, including down to the ankles but these  would be best described are robes or gowns.

And finally there are the costumes inspired by Greek mythology. Greek mythology takes in the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece (and there were plenty of these). It also accounts for Greek heroes and monsters (and there were quite a few of these too).

Greek mythology costumes are vast in number because there were so many different gods and goddesses. But for the sake of a fancy dress party you could probably get away with wearing a long white robe and some kind of adornments to categorize you as this or that god. Greek gods often had symbols that were identified with them.

For instance, Zeus might have a lightning bolt as his symbol. This indicated that he was master of lightning and thunder (or possibly that he could control the weather). They symbol hints at the power that each god had.

Depending on the mythology that you believe, Medusa is a full on monster or is half woman/half monster.

In the first version she is the offspring of chthonic monsters from an archaic world long before man existed. In fact the monsters were known as Phorcys and his sister Ceto and they had three daughters including Medusa.

In the second version of the myth, Medusa was originally a beautiful woman who tended the goddess Athena’s temple. You know, sweeping up, doing the dishes and a spot of DIY here and there. Anyway, Poseidon takes a shine to her and sleeps with her. Athena gets pretty mad when she hears this (jealous perhaps?) and turns Medusa into a monster like creature.

If Greek mythology tells us anything about their Gods, it’s that they were pretty spiteful and merciless in punishing humans for things that didn’t seem to be the humans fault.

To this extent, Athena turns the beautiful Medusa into a woman with a head of snakes or a snakedo in hairstylist speak. As further punishment, Athena makes sure that anyone that looks at Medusa turns to stone. Sheesh, just for sleeping with Poseidon…what a bitch !

So you can understand why Medusa might get a bit cranky over the centuries that she rots in a cave and turns everyone that tries to look at her into stone.

Her end comes at the hands of Perseus when he manages to make her look at her own reflection and turn herself to stone.

To this extent, most Medusa costumes are simply a beautiful outfit with a  headpiece that has snakes wriggling and writhing all over the place.

It makes an ideal costume for a party because it looks good. You can get some fine gowns and nice accessories in most Medusa costumes but you also have the distinctive snake headpiece.

Everyone is bound to be impressed with the snake headpiece and comment on it and you’ll also look good in the elegant gown in a Greek Goddess style.

This is all fine and dandy but occasionally you see people dressed in all black. And just like the people that dress in all black today, these people seem a bit more cooler than the other types.
