Medusa Costume – Talk About Having A Bad Hair Day !

The Medusa costume is another popular costume for Halloween or any other occasion where you want to dress up and look a little silly. Medusa is a half woman/half creature out of Greek mythology and is another type of Greek costume that you can wear to a party and really stand out from the crowd.

Depending on the mythology that you believe, Medusa is a full on monster or is half woman/half monster.

In the first version she is the offspring of chthonic monsters from an archaic world long before man existed. In fact the monsters were known as Phorcys and his sister Ceto and they had three daughters including Medusa.

In the second version of the myth, Medusa was originally a beautiful woman who tended the goddess Athena’s temple. You know, sweeping up, doing the dishes and a spot of DIY here and there. Anyway, Poseidon takes a shine to her and sleeps with her. Athena gets pretty mad when she hears this (jealous perhaps?) and turns Medusa into a monster like creature.

If Greek mythology tells us anything about their Gods, it’s that they were pretty spiteful and merciless in punishing humans for things that didn’t seem to be the humans fault.

To this extent, Athena turns the beautiful Medusa into a woman with a head of snakes or a snakedo in hairstylist speak. As further punishment, Athena makes sure that anyone that looks at Medusa turns to stone. Sheesh, just for sleeping with Poseidon…what a bitch !

So you can understand why Medusa might get a bit cranky over the centuries that she rots in a cave and turns everyone that tries to look at her into stone.

Her end comes at the hands of Perseus when he manages to make her look at her own reflection and turn herself to stone.

To this extent, most Medusa costumes are simply a beautiful outfit with a  headpiece that has snakes wriggling and writhing all over the place.

It makes an ideal costume for a party because it looks good. You can get some fine gowns and nice accessories in most Medusa costumes but you also have the distinctive snake headpiece.

Everyone is bound to be impressed with the snake headpiece and comment on it and you’ll also look good in the elegant gown in a Greek Goddess style.
